Five Tips for Teaching English

When breaking down five tips for teaching English, the student-teacher relationship is sometimes more important than the spelling, grammar and essay portion of the class. Teachers must understand the subject matter and appreciate the information that they are passing on to their students. Not everything should be done by the book and sometimes it requires a thought process outside the box for success.

Practice and patience

English is not the most sought after subject by students in school and requires a lot of practice and patience. It is necessary to understand that no judgment should be passed if the student is giving his or her all and maximizing his or her effort. You also need to realize that just because one child understands a concept sooner does not mean another child is not trying.

Get everyone involved

Do all of the readings out loud (assuming no child has a speech impediment). One of the most important aspects of English is paying attention to the current concept and if kids are dozing off, this is impossible. Quiz your class frequently and also offer extra help when needed. Some children need a helping hand and private time to explain harder concepts. Others are shy and feel more comfortable after class in a one-on-one setting.

All classes and students are unique, so apply these tips on a trial basis. When teaching a class, one of the more important factors is teacher availability so the student feels that if he or she does not understand a concept, he has a helping hand. Also, avoid harsh criticism as it causes children to withdraw from even trying.
